[Whanganui] The River That Runs Across

Like my OG hood (Palmy represent!), Whanganui has a river running through it. One cool thing about it though, is that one side of the river is up the hill and you get the best views there. Definitely a must-do for a visitor.

The most fun way to go up to the lookout is via the underground elevator that has been around for about a century. The elevator is one of those cool old types where you slide the door open, and then slide another grill open to get into the elevator cage. All manual. And then there is a friendly operator inside that will take you up (after you pay the fee of course). The elevator reminds me of this old service elevator that I used when I worked at Farmers in Palmy.

Up top, the view is definitely very nice, especially if you come to watch the sunset. We almost missed it as shown below.

That platform above is where the actual lookout is. But what’s even more fun is going up the Durrie Hill tower just behind it to get a slightly higher view. Beware, many steps to go to the top, there is no elevator here! The views are worth it though.
