[Christchurch] The Cardboard Cathedral

We last visited Christchurch in 2013 in the middle of the post-quake rebuild. I couldn’t wait to see the Cardboard Cathedral in construction, and took a photo of it in a previous post here (Canterbury Tales: Crusader City Rebuild).

Fast forward a couple of years, the cathedral is finished. A bit of background info, this is meant to be a temporary cathedral while a decision is being made for a permanent replacement of the venerable Christchurch Cathedral (RIP… look it up, it’s really quite beautiful). Made out of thick tough cathedral, this new one is very contemporary with clean lines, a bright and airy atmosphere inside. I really love this fresh design by Shigeru Ban.

Viewing the altar, check out the funky cardboard cross!
