[Oman] Forts Around the Country

When we researched what to do in Oman, forts came out on top. And there were 3 forts and castles that were within reasonable driving distance from our base in Muscat, close enough to do them as a day trip.

The first is Nizwa Fort. Funny thing is, I didn’t plan to spend much time in Nizwa at all. We meant to stop for a quick lunch before heading to the other forts. But our daughter had so much fun running around inside the maze-like structure that we just rolled with it. Apparently she was looking for mice! The imagination of toddlers is a wonderful thing 🙂

I totally imagined myself jumping around the parapets like the Prince of Persia haha…

We definitely underestimated how much time you could spend in here. It could easily have been a day trip by itself. But no, we had to move on to…

The next fort which is Bahla Fort. This is supposed to be the most famous of all Omani forts, and a UNESCO Heritage Site. My original plan was to explore this one, but we were running late for time and everyone was tired. So I just took a photo outside. I guess it is a similar structure inside.

The next destination is close to Bahla Fort so we planned to just drive by and check out the outside anyway. By the time we got there, the sun was going down fast, and the reception was already closed. This is the Jabreen Castle, which differs with the other forts, as the castle was not build for a military purpose. Scholarly pursuits and the arts were the thing for occupants of this castle back in the days. It doesn’t stop us from having cool cannons at the entrance though!

Oman is such a beautiful country, with friendly locals, epic landscapes and amazing traditional architecture. I wish more people know more about this country and take the time to visit. For now, onwards we go to our next destination… Qatar!
