Easter Weekend Road Trip

Also known as… The Unintentional Tiki Tour of North Island! I love driving on the open road so it was good to get this out of my system after keeping it low key in Auckland for so long!

While on a road trip I do tend to make a lot of these postcard style photographs. I think being a tourist is in my blood…

So we left Auckland Thursday night to stay over in Tauranga. We departed Tauranga on Good Friday and headed towards Palmerston North to visit relatives, but with a slight detour to Feilding beforehand (just because I’ve never been there!). Feilding has been consistently voted The Most Beautiful Town in NZ, and it’s easy to see why. Lovely clocktower, lots of greeneries and the town centre shops have a boutique-ish feel to them.

During our stay in Palmy, I let the wife and baby sleep in while I took a drive to the Te Apiti Wind Farm just past Ashhurst. It’s quite a mind-blowing view seeing all these windmills dotted all over the hills. Here are my attempts to combine sustainable energy with Kiwi postcard style photographs.

On the way back, instead of taking the direct SH1 north we took a detour to visit Ratana, a little Maori settlement with an imposing church. We really stuck out like a sore thumb there, playing tourists… But this lovely building was so worth it!

From there we drove through Wanganui (or Whanganui?) and a really fun mountain pass to reward ourselves with high tea at the famous Chateau Tongariro at the National Park… Here’s another postcard style photograph.

Finally, what is a Kiwi road trip without some chill out time with coffee and cafe food?
